Mexico 2012

Our first day in Cancun

We just arrived in Cancun.

There was a huge queue at the airport for the passport control. The customs were working very fast, looking like machines.

When you arrive at the airport, you have to fill a form that you keep with your passport. It’s like a tourist document.

The first thing we notice is the climate, nice and warm, the latin music at the bar outside the airport, people looking very relaxed and the sound of birds. It’s not the same you hear in Europe.

A guy from the car rental agency was waiting for us and transferred us with shuttle until the car rental. Bad news for us: the car we’ve rented online didn’t include the liability insurance so we paid the double of what we thought. It wasn’t clear on the website. Not so happy about that but alright, we wouldn’t want to travel by public transport.

An American couple warned us they are used to rent cars here and have to deal a lot with police corruption. They’ve been stopped several times and had to pay different amounts of money to ”pay their lunch”.

Roads are very nice, and traffic is alright. Mexicans can drive much better than Greeks, even if they use different rules than here in Europe.

We traveled until Cancun and passed the busy ”Zona Hotelera”. Long way, longer than we thought. We quite struggled to find our way downtown. All avenues look similar and we were tired.

We stopped to ask our way and were lucky to be in the Avenue we were looking for. A stop at an internet café, call to our hosts, quick tasty burrito at ‘’El Burro’’ and finally, we met our first hosts.

Carlos and Gaby are nice, have a good apartment with swimming pool outside. They have 2 young dogs living with them. The place is busy with cars as it is in an avenue. We’re not used to car noise anymore but it hasn’t disturbed us at all.

Our first impression is Mexico’s life standard looks a little higher than Turkey when we were living there and the weather is perfect for February. It’s warm and humid with some quick showers and sun appears again. Mexicans are very friendly and helpful and do not annoy you.

Our hosts were quite welcoming. We went for a drink and tasted Micheladas. It’s a Mexican drink made with beer, lime juice, tomato juice (or Clamato), and assorted sauces, spices, and peppers. You can’t compare with the beer we know. It’s like 1 liter and it tastes good. Nice and refreshing, we enjoyed it as much as a cocktail.

Before departure, we have heard a lot of stories about corruption, criminality and robbery. Until now, we haven’t felt any danger anywhere and police is omnipresent.

We slept like babies in a guest room, fan on for our first night.
