Mexico 2012

Palenque – Misol Ha – Agua Azul

At 8:30 we left the hotel and stopped at Oxxo for our traditional breakfast.

We drove first to Palenque site and enjoyed the ruins and discovered the jungle. It was worth it. You could enter the site and admire the view, the tomb of Pakal and so on. In the jungle, we discovered a wonderful Waterfall.

Our second stop was a few km further at Misol Ha. Not too many tourist but more Mexicans as it was Saturday. The waterfall was great and you could pass under it by foot and enter the 30 meters deep cave.

Our last visit was in Agua Azul. The road was long and with many turns, so very exhausting but the landscape was nice and different, with mountains, corns all around and Chiapas villages. There, kids are selling corns and bananas on the way. They are almost at every ”tope”. I bought them some fried bananas and there were delicious.

Agua Azul is a big site and you can swim in the river. The water is quite fresh but it s worth it. There were many tourists and it’s not allowed to swim everywhere. At the site, many Chiapas people selling souvenirs, food and drinks.

We left Agua Azul at 15:40 for our long way back. We drove until Escarcega and refueled and ate at a taqueria. This one was for local people and much cheaper. Everywhere we go, food is cooked differently.

We continued our way to Calakmul until 23:30. We arrived at the entrance of the site and realized we ll have to drive 20 km until the entrance before taking a coach inside the jungle. On the left side, there was a path in the jungle until a hotel, but not really in our price range.

So we drove further until Xpujil and found a very cheap motel. This one is cheaper than in Palenque and much better.

Hotel price: 300 pesos
